About Denby
Denby Pottery is a pottery company based in Denby. They produce durable and high quality kitchenware and dinnerware including items like full dinner sets as well as mugs. 200 years of experience means that they have perfected the art of creating desirable items that don't look out of place in any home.
Still manufactured in Denby, and still relying on locally sourced clay, the company has forged a reputation as being one of the best pottery manufacturers. They have more than 5000 glazes, including more than 200 unique glaze recipes, and every piece of pottery that comes out of the Denby factory undergoes rigorous quality testing and checking to ensure that it is of the highest possible standard. Only after this quality check do the pieces receive the Denby stamp and make it to the shelves.
Denby History
In 1806, a seam of clay was found during the building of a road that was designed to link the industrial towns of Derbyshire. A local entrepreneur and designer, William Bourne, realised the exceptional qualities of this clay and he started producing salt glazed pottery from a number of small buildings in the vicinity in 1809. Thus, Denby Pottery was born.
The company initially produced bottles and jars, and they were used for items like pickles, ink, polish, medicines, and more. Joseph Bourne, son of William and the manager of the pottery business, had a strong business acumen. He patented many of the company's designs as well as their methods for glazing the pottery.
The original coating of the pottery was created by throwing standard salt on the clay when it was at its hottest. This produced a shiny, brown finish. At the beginning of the 20th Century, however, the company was forced to change its direction, away from clay jars and bottles and towards kitchenware and homeware items. The move was made because glass and glazing techniques had become cheaper; pricing effectively meant that it was no longer profitable to manufacture functional items in this way.
The Utility Brown glaze made a return during the 2nd World War, as coloured glazes were no longer permitted and the company struggled to get the materials they required to make some of the more ambitious colours. The bottles and jars once again became popular, this time with members of the armed forces, who used the products to store their rations and other items.
More recently, the company has enjoyed considerable investment. They now produce an extensive selection of kitchenware and homeware ranges. They have some of the most popular pottery ranges on the market, in fact, with designs like the Denby Halo range and the Denby Monsoon Cosmic line. The range of colours and styles is one of the reasons that Denby has become such a big name in stoneware.
Mug Material
To this day, Denby uses the same locally sourced clay in the production of all its products. They also rely on the same glazing techniques that have been passed down from one generation to the next, although they have tweaked and continued to improve on them during this time.
Whether you're buying Denby Halo mugs or any other Danby mug, you will benefit from the use of clay. Clay mugs retain their heat without transmitting it to the outside of the mug. This means that your cup of coffee or tea will stay hotter for longer, but you won't burn your fingers on the outside of your favourite cup. The glazed finish is easy to clean, which also means that they are a safe and healthy option, and the glazes are made using non-toxic substances.
Mug Size
Size matters when it comes to choosing the right mug, but there is no individual choice of size that is right for everyone. Some people like a large mug of coffee because of the volume, while others prefer a lesser volume of liquid. People with large hands are happy when they find large mugs that sits more conveniently in their hand, while people with smaller hands may prefer a smaller size so that they don't always have to use the handle. Denby mugs come in different sizes, as well as different styles, which means that you can choose a mug according to your preferences.
Mug Appearance
The look of the mug is also an important consideration. From Denby Hal mugs to Cosmic, you will always enjoy a well finished glaze on your Denby mug. This wide range of styles also means that you choose a colour palette or a design style that matches your preferences, that matches your dining set, or that you think will make the perfect gift for a loved one. The different designs also have different dimensions and may differ in appearance in other ways too. Some are straight and cylindrical in their design; others are conical; others have a more bulbous lower section.
