About Denby
In 1806, a seam of clay was discovered in the Derbyshire countryside, during the construction of a road to connect towns in the area. Local entrepreneur William Bourne recognised the potential of this clay, and in 1809, Denby Pottery was formed to lift the clay and produce high quality pottery. Bourne's son, Joseph, was put in charge of the company, which was then known as Joseph Bourne Pottery.
Joseph Bourne Pottery initially produced stoneware bottles and pots that were used to store items ranging from pills to ginger beer. Joseph was an innovator and his business acumen meant that he patented many of the techniques used at the time, including the salt glazing techniques that the company used. Salt glazing means that common salt is thrown in the kiln fires during the glazing stage. The salt vapour creates the shiny brown coating that were seen on all early pieces.
By the 1920s, Denby had expanded to include kitchenware items like jelly moulds, as well as homeware items like hot water bottles. Although they reverted to the utility brown stoneware that they initially started with, during World War II, they once again began to manufacture items for the home after the end of the war. The company has expanded and grown, expanding its product range and its reach, since this time.
The Benefits Of Denby Stoneware
One of the reasons that Denby Pottery has become such a popular name in homeware is the quality of their stoneware. Every piece is made using locally sourced Derbyshire clay and is handcrafted by skilled potters using techniques that have been passed down for over 200 years. Every piece goes through dozens of pairs of hands before it reaches the market. The handcrafting technique means that every piece is unique, while the glazing technique ensures that the pieces are practical, durable, and resistant to chips and other forms of damage.
Mugs, Cups And Tea Sets
Chief among the Denby Natural Canvas pieces are cups and mugs that are designed for comfort and convenience. The stoneware containers keep your drinks hot, but the outside does not become overly hot so can still be handled. The mugs do not become tarnished and it is important that they are strong and durable because cups and mugs tend to enjoy very regular use.
Most of us have our favourite mugs. This is usually dictated by their size, how comfortable they are to hold, and even the perceived difference in taste that they give when used for your favourite beverage. Denby mugs feel great in the hand, with a reassuring weight and size combined with good looks and attractive finish making these a very popular choice of mug and cup.
Plates And Bowls
You can also buy Denby Natural Canvas plates and bowls. Bowls range in size from smaller noodle bowls to large shallow bowls and extra large nesting bowls. Nesting bowls are convenient because they can be stacked and easily stored in the kitchen cupboard or sideboard. Similarly, plates can vary in size from side plates to dinner plates and they all offer the convenience that consumers have come to expect from Denby Pottery.
Dinner Sets
Dinner sets are a convenient way to stock your kitchen cupboards or sideboards. Buying a set means that you don't have to attempt to match different designs to create a complementary set. It also offers you cost savings when compared to buying every item individually. If you are looking for a housewarming or a wedding gift, dining sets are a popular choice because every new homeowner needs crockery like plates and mugs.
The Denby Natural Canvas 16 piece box set includes 4 dinner plates, 4 small plates, 4 cereal bowls, and 4 plain mugs; everything you need in order to be able to set a table for 4.
Functional And Convenient
Denby Pottery is renowned for its quality and strength, and the Natural Canvas collection is no different. Their stoneware is very strong and fully vitrified, making it strong, durable, and resistant to chips and most forms of damage. Such is the strength of their pottery that the Denby Natural Canvas collection can be placed in the dishwasher, making maintenance quick and simple. It can also be used in the oven and microwave and can be placed in the freezer too.
Denby Care
Although Denby Pottery is durable and strong, there are some guidelines that you should follow in order to further prolong the life of your stoneware. If you are placing the pottery in the dishwasher, use a low temperature setting and try to avoid liquid detergents. While the pottery can be placed in the oven or microwave, you shouldn't do so to warm up the plates for serving. This can damage both the dinnerware and to the microwave itself.
