About Denby
Established in 1809, Denby was founded by William Bourne and combined the strengths of local craftsmen with the quality of local Derbyshire clay. The Majolica glaze was introduced in the late 19th Century and the blue glaze, that is still available in a lot of modern Denby Pottery pieces, launched in the 1920s. In the 1930s, the range extended even further to incorporate lines like Epic and Cottage Blue. The Marmaduke rabbits were also launched at this time.
The 1940s saw a restriction on the materials that could be used; specifically, the company were left with just a brown glaze on all their products. The produced items like teapots, rum bottles for the navy, and insulators and battery jars to help with the war effort. During the 1950s and 1960s, the company became more design oriented, and rather than just producing functional items they launched a host of new designs. Further designs and improvements were made to the Denby dinnerware range.
