About Denby Pottery
Denby Pottery was established in 1809, by William Bourne. Bourne had investigated a seam of clay found in the Derbyshire hills and recognised its superior quality. Although the company was established by Bourne senior, he left the task of running the business to his son, Joseph.
Initially, the company made a name for itself producing bottles and jars. Stoneware containers of this type proved especially popular during the early part of the 19th Century, because glassware was still an expensive luxury that very few people could afford to invest in. The stoneware bottles and jars were used to hold everything from medicines and mineral water to preserves, pickles, and even ginger beer. At the same time, Joseph Bourne used his skills of innovation to help him identify improved methods of glazing the stoneware, before patenting his improvements.
Denby used a salt glazing technique, which meant that ordinary salt was thrown into the embers of the kiln when it was at its hottest, and this created a unique brown glaze, essentially decorating the glazed pottery. In the early 20th Century, Denby recognised that glassware was becoming more affordable, and they turned their attention to the manufacture of high quality tableware and kitchenware items, instead of the bottles and jars they had been producing. While other potteries in the area closed, as glassware overtook salt glazing stoneware, Denby not only managed to survive but changed the course and the future of the pottery company.
It was after Word War II that Denby really rose to the fore of kitchenware. Although the company is now owned by a private equity firm, it retains its original values and continues to produce high quality and attractive items of stoneware. The Denby Regency Green range was introduced in 1989 and quickly became a favourite, with its natural green watercolours found on items ranging from the Denby Regency Green tea pot to mugs, plates, pasta bowls, and even butter dishes.

Denby Regency Green Pasta Bowl And Other Bowls
Pasta bowls are different to soup or cereal bowls. While soup bowls tend to be deep, with tall walls, a pasta bowl is usually wider and shallower. The Denby Regency Green pasta bowl is like a combination of plate and bowl. Shallow enough to still be used for dinner, and without the need for a spoon, but big enough that it can contain a decent sized portion. There is also a rimmed bowl, which has similar dimensions to the pasta bowl, but that has a rim around the outside. This bowl also utilises the Regency Green colour in a slightly different way compared to the pasta bowl, but it is equally high quality and just as useful.
Plates And Platters
There are many plates and platters that also fall under the Regency Green label. The dinner plate is a 26.5cm plate. It is white in the centre, with the green being found on the rim around the edge of the plate. It is made from the high quality enamelled stoneware that Denby is renowned for, and this, along with any of the dessert plates ane other styles of plate that are available, means that it can be used to warm food in the microwave and it can be placed in the fridge or freezer. It is dishwasher safe, although you should avoid using detergents that are too strong. The dessert plate, or salad plate, is exactly the same as the dinner plate, except that it is a slightly smaller 22cm plate.
Other Dining Set Items
Denby not only manufactures the plates and bowls to eat from, but the platters, serving dishes, and other items that are used for serving food on or in. The medium serving bowl is a 1.4L bowl that can be used in the oven, as well as the microwave. The sauce jug has a classic sauce jug design, complete with convenient handle and pouring spout, and it can hold as much as 0.4L of fluid. Butter dishes, sugar bowls, and other jugs are all available as part of the dining set design too.
Tea And Coffee
Tea and coffee ae not only our favourite drinks when we're sat at home, but they are often used as a means of getting closer to friends and family. We invite those close to us around for a brew and a chat, and if you have a Denby Regency Green teapot, cafetiere, mugs, and sugar bowl, you can start a conversation about your new favourite hot drinks set. The Denby Regency Green coffee beaker is tapered and will hold 0.3L of coffee. The stoneware clay retains heat for longer, so your cup of coffee will still be hot when you come to drink it. Tea cups and craftsman mugs are among the other options for serving hot drinks.
Glasses And Coasters
Although Denby is known primarily as a pottery, they do produce other kitchenware and diningware items, including glasses, coasters, and place mats. This means that you can buy a full matching set, rather than investing in a few matching pieces and then being forced to look around in a bid to try and find something that is close enough to your original design. You can buy Denby glasses, including white wine and red wine glasses, in the Regency Green design and in sets of 2, so it is easy to create a set of Regency Green Denby glasses that matches your dining set.
