About Denby
A seam of clay was discovered in Derbyshire in 1806 and, following this discovery, local entrepreneur William Bourne established a pottery in buildings around the site in 1809.
Denby used a unique salt glazing technique, which meant that salt was thrown during the hottest stage of the glazing. This technique meant that the company produced high quality stoneware and ceramics, and although their initial success came from the manufacture of functional bottles and jars, this was soon expanded to include additional items for the home and, in particular, the kitchen.
To this day, the company continues to use a salt glazing technique, and their vitrified glaze means that the items are essentially finished in glass, making them scratch and chip resistant.
