Staub Cookware

Staub is a French manufacturer of kitchenware and cookware, especially well known for their manufacture of the cast iron casserole dish, also called the cocotte or Dutch oven. The company has been producing its double enamelled pots for more than 40 years and is widely used by professional chefs as well as keen amateur cooks.

Despite being acquired by Zwilling J.A. Henckels in 2008, the brand remains independent and continues to produce high quality items under their own marque today. Choose from a range of colours, benefit from features like the Aroma Rain flat lid and every cocotte goes through more than 100 inspections to ensure that it meets the highest standards possible.

About Staub

Staub was founded in 1947, in a disused artillery factory. Originally located in Alsace, in France, the company was formed by Frances Staub who used the latest manufacturing processes to produce the cast iron pots.

Every Staub pot is double enamelled and quality checked to ensure that every item that reaches the consumer is the best it can be. Features like the enamelled cast iron ensure that the pots are durable and long lasting while also being attractive and extremely functional. The nubs on the interior of the lid help ensure the best taste from every meal you cook, and the quality of the cookware is highlighted by the fact that chefs like Paul Bocuse, who is a Michelin star chef, are brand ambassadors for this French kitchenware icon.

The Cast Iron Cocotte

The cocotte, which is also called a Dutch oven or simply a casserole dish, is designed to slow cook single pot meals. This means combining meat and vegetables, as well as stock and seasoning, and then cooking the meal at a low temperature in the oven. This style of cooking is popular because it is convenient, and it is possible to leave food cooking even while you are busy doing other things.

However, using a poor-quality casserole dish means that you can end up with mixed results. Low grade materials do not transmit heat well, which means that the food will cook with cold pockets and hot areas, so some of the food will be uncooked while other areas will be burned. Staub's use of enamelled cast iron helps prevent this because they have excellent thermal transmission and retention rates.

The size of casserole dishes can vary. Smaller dishes, such as the 10cm cocotte, can be used to cook individual meals and desserts, while larger 24cm dishes can cook much larger volumes of food.

You can also choose between a round and an oval cocotte, depending on your preference. A round casserole dish makes greater use of space, but an oval one offers the benefit of size while also being easier to fit into the oven when you are preparing other dishes.

The functionality and durability of the cast iron Dutch oven are among its chief attributes, but enamelled cast iron is also great looking and can fit with either a modern or traditional design. In fact, such is the quality of a Staub casserole dish that you won't want to restrict its use to the kitchen. You can serve the food you prepare, on the table, in the pot, and its heat retention and good looks means that it will wow your guests.

The Manufacturing Process

Every Staub cocotte is manufactured individually. It will undergo approximately 100 quality checks including visual and technical inspection, which means that you can enjoy total peace of mind that you will receive a high-quality item whenever you place an order.

The pots are also enamelled, and this not only enhances the look of the pot by affording buyers access to a wider range of colours than the standard cast iron black, but it also means that the casserole dish is virtually indestructible. It is easy to clean, either by hand or in the dishwasher, and it doesn't require any special treatment to ensure that it will last for years to come.

Staub creates aluminium moulds, which are used to create sand moulds, into which the molten iron is poured. When a piece is finished, the sand mould is thrown away, ensuring that every single pot is unique and that you will receive a truly original Staub cocotte. The pots are then blast cleaned, removing any excess debris left over from the moulding process. 2 to 3 internal and external layers of enamel are then added to the products before they are ready to be sold.

The Benefits Of Cast Iron Enamel

Enamelled cast iron is a high quality and appealing cooking material. It doesn't taint the food and it ensures that you can cook succulent food that doesn't dry out during the cooking process. Cast iron is extremely tough and durable. It will not scratch or chip and is very difficult to damage. It is highly unlikely that any damage will occur to the casserole dish through everyday use. Cast iron has excellent thermal properties. It heats up quickly and evenly, so you won't experience cold pockets in the pan, and this means that your food will be evenly heated throughout. The enamel coating further helps prevent damage from being done to the cookware.

Choose Your Colour

One of the great features of Staub casserole dishes is the enamelled coating. This enables Staub to create pots in a host of different colours, which means that you can choose according to personal taste, to match your dinner set, or so that your cocotte matches the colour of other items in your kitchen. Remember that a Staub casserole dish can last decades, though, so choose a colour that you will still love in 10 years' time or more.

Staub Teapots

As well as stocking a variety of cocotte sizes, from the individual 10cm pots to the much larger 29cm pots, at ECookShop we also stock the great looking, traditional teapots that the company has become known for.

Like the casserole dishes, the teapot can be used on any heating surface, including halogen and even induction hobs. It is dishwasher safe and easy to clean by hand, while the cast iron and enamel coating once again ensures that this kitchenware item will last long enough that you can pass it down through the family for future generations to enjoy.
