Royal Worcester is renowned throughout the world for their ability to manufacture classically English collections of luxury porcelain tableware and gift ware to consistently high standards, a tradition going back to the mid 1700s, allowing them to rightfully claim their place as one of the truly iconic British brands. In recent years Royal Worcester has become part of the Portmeirion Group, with sister brands such as Portmeirion, Spode and Pimpernel, which has allowed them to draw on the quality, integrity and skill resources of the Portmeirion Group without discarding their history and provenance to produce effortlessly elegant ranges and collections based on heritage designs or contemporary designs which reflect Royal Worcester's illustrious past.
Until the 18th Century the manufacture of porcelain was exclusive to the Far East which added a cachet of exoticism, which it still maintains to a certain extent today, and made it a major fascination for Potters throughout Europe who spent much time and effort attempting to find the formula that would enable them to produce fine porcelain pottery.
The Worcester Pottery, as it then was, was founded in 1751,when Royal Worcester's forefather's discovered the magic formula which allowed them to produce their desired high quality porcelain, later becoming the Royal Worcester, as it is still known as today, when Royal Warrants were gained in the early 1800s. Their high quality products rapidly became synonymous with high end porcelain pieces so Royal Worcester successfully produced prestigious items for the upper classes.
Right through it's more than 250 years of existence Royal Worcester has always developed, and maintained, very close ties with artists, and the art they produce, employing artists to apply their skills to decorate a specific design as well as using their artistry to provide continuing inspiration. To this day certain Royal Worcester collections are hand painted by an artist and etched with gold.
Royal Worcester are very much inspired by their heritage, not enslaved by it, so making collections which can live in the modern world are as much taken into account as any other considerations leading to simply elegant collections which are often oven, freezer, microwave or dishwasher safe though please check the individual collections for further information on these.
